Liposuction

A FIT AND WELL-PROPORTIONED BODY IS OFTEN CONSIDERED A SYMBOL OF HEALTH AND VITALITY.  But despite good health and a reasonable level of fitness, some individuals may still have a body with disproportionate contours due to localized fat deposits.  These areas may be due to heredity or family traits rather than a lack of weight control or fitness. If you are bothered by excess fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise, liposuction may be right for you.  In general, liposuction slims and reshapes specific areas of the body, such as the thighs, hips, abdomen, back, arms, breast, and neck.  Liposuction is performed using a long, hollow tube called a cannula, with an opening at one end which is inserted through a very small incision in the skin.  At the cannula’s opposite end, a vacuum pressure unit suctions unwanted fat away.  Removing excess fat in these areas can improve your body contour and make you feel more proportionate.

You’ve tried dieting… You’ve tried exercise…
But parts of your body have simply refused to tone up.
Now you can change all that with
Laser Body Sculpting!

At the Center for Plastic Surgery, Dr. Eliopoulos is committed to providing the most current and effective treatments for our patients.  For those of you who have been holding out for an easier and safer way to remove unwanted fat, we have the answer you’ve been looking for- Smartlipo™ Laser Body Sculpting!  Traditional liposuction continues to be one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures nationwide.  Therefore, it is not surprising that Smartlipo Laser Body Sculpting, also known as Laser-Assisted Lipolysis, has created quite a stir.  This revolutionary advancement in liposuction technology allows permanent removal of unwanted fat in a safer and gentler way than traditional liposuction.  Smartlipo™ is the only system specifically designed to destroy fat cells and coagulate tissue leading to tissue retraction and skin tightening.  Smartlipo is designed to target unwanted fat more safely, with less trauma, less pain, less downtime, and with skin tightening, unlike traditional liposuction.  Also, because it does not need to be done in a hospital with general anesthesia, it is often more cost effective.

SmartLipo Technology
Smartlipo™ by Cynosure was the first FDA approved laser system for laser lipolysis in November 2006, but has been used world wide for 8 years prior.  Because our practice believes in providing only the very best treatments for our patients, we have chosen the most state of the art version called Smartlipo MPX™, the first and only FDA approved dual wavelength laser lipolysis workstation available.  This newest generation system allows the physician to use the 1064 nm and the 1320 nm wavelengths individually and sequentially in a “blended fashion” using MultiPlex (MPX) technology for optimal results, and safety.  Each of these wavelengths brings unique characteristics to the laser lipolysis procedure.  One is better suited for liquefying fat and coagulating tissue and blood vessels and the other is more aggressive and suited for targeting skin tightening.  By “blending” these wavelengths with the MPX system, you can benefit from both wavelengths more effectively than with either wavelength alone.  Multiplexing the two wavelengths provides more even, uniform delivery of laser energy to maximize the effectiveness and safety of the treatment, decreases the time of the treatments, allows larger areas to be treated, and helps induce skin tightening, and optimizes overall patient outcomes and satisfaction.  Also, we use the SmartSense™ handpiece, an intelligent delivery system which regulates the laser output from Smartlipo MPX™ and enhances safety and uniformity of energy delivery.  This provides added safety against burning the skin along with superior aesthetic outcomes.

Who is a candidate and what areas can be treated?
Ideal patients are in good health, close to normal body weight, with areas of fat that will not respond to diet and exercise.  Smartlipo™ is best suited for small to moderate areas of fat in the neck, arms, abdomen, inner and outer thighs (saddle bags), “love handles”, knees, back, “bra” fat, male breast tissue.  Smartlipo™ is useful in areas of loose or lax flabby skin, or for more fibrous areas of fat such as back, breast (male gynecomastia), or even areas previously treated with liposuction

What happens during this procedure?
Smartlipo™ laser-assisted lipolysis is a minimally invasive procedure done by Dr. Eliopoulos in her office. This procedure does not require a general anesthetic.  Instead the areas to be treated are numbed with local tumescent anesthesia (numbing fluid), so you are awake, but comfortable. There is very little pain or discomfort involved.  You may feel a minor stinging sensation and an impression of tugging at your skin during the procedure, but these discomforts are minimal. After making a tiny 1-2 mm knick in the skin, the laser is inserted through a 1 mm cannula into the fat pockets. The cannula, with the tip of the laser fiber exposed approximately 2mm, is then moved in a “back and forth” fanning motion.  As the fiber tip comes into contact with the fat, fat cells are destroyed. The laser also coagulates the tissue and blood vessels, resulting in less bleeding, less bruising, less trauma, and less down time.  The laser has also been shown to promote tissue tightening through this bulk thermal heating and tissue coagulation. Some of the liquefied fat is then aspirated using traditional liposuction, but with smaller cannulas than typically used and with less force or trauma to the tissue.  The body will also absorb the remainder of these destroyed fat cells during the healing process.  The procedure takes about 1-2 hours. Immediately after your procedure, you will be able to walk out and be able to perform light activities.

What is the recovery like?
Unlike the need for prolonged recovery and possible overnight stay when traditional liposuction is performed with heavy anesthesia, downtime is minimized with laser-assisted lipolysis because SmartLipo MPX™ significantly reduces tissue trauma and post procedural pain while completely eliminating post-anesthesia recovery. Immediately after your procedure, you will be able to walk out and be able to perform light activities. Patients can resume normal activity later that same day and most patients are able to return to normal desk type work in 1 to 2 days.  Exercise will be limited for about 2 weeks.  The extent of swelling and bruising varies and can be minimal or could last about a week.  A compression garment will be worn for a short period after the treatment ranging from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the body parts treated.  Results can be seen with the first few weeks and continue to improve over 3 to 6 months.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

A FLAT AND WELL-TONED ABDOMEN IS SOMETHING MANY OF US STRIVE FOR THROUGH EXERCISE AND WEIGHT CONTROL.  But regardless of effort, sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals.  Many people are unhappy with an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging.  The most common causes of this include heredity, multiple pregnancies, prior surgery, and significant fluctuations in weight.  If you desire a tighter, flatter abdomen, then a tummy tuck may be appropriate to help you achieve your goals.  In general, a tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, and restores weakened or separated abdominal muscles.  Incisions can be designed so that the scars will be hidden beneath underwear and bathing suits.  An abdominoplasty creates an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer, often enhancing your body image and confidence.

Body Lifts - Thigh-Buttock Lift - Upper Arm Lift

A WELL-TONED BODY WITH SMOOTH CONTOURS OFTEN IS A SIGN OF FITNESS ACHIEVED BY HEALTHY DIET AND EXERCISE. But exercise cannot always achieve results for individuals who have loose, sagging skin and uneven contours. Aging, sun damage, pregnancy and significant fluctuations in weight as well as genetic factors may contribute to poor tissue elasticity and can result in sagging of the abdomen, buttocks, thighs and loose upper arms. Weight loss procedures like gastric bypass are becoming more popular and are becoming one of the more common reasons patients seek these body contouring procedures.

If you desire a firmer, more youthful-looking body contour, then a surgical body lift may help achieve your goals. In general, a "body lift" removes excess sagging fat and skin resulting in smoother skin and contours of the: 1) abdominal area often extending around the sides and into the lower back area, 2) buttocks that may be low or flat, 3) groin area that may sag into the inner thigh, 4) outer thigh area, and 5) upper arms including the armpit region, sometimes extending to the back.
